Kudos to The Big Tex Fair Food Drive-Thru

STORY AND PHOTOS BY JAN OSBORN.

Like many other Texans, the cancellation of The State Fair of Texas this year was a big disappointment to me. Every year I enjoy strolling through the Women’s Building, looking over the livestock, and mostly, just people watching. When the decision was made to host a drive-thru experience, I was feeling uncertain, but I purchased our tickets and planned to go on Sunday. After hearing about the long waits in line the week before, I briefly considered giving our tickets away. I am so thankful we did not! We arrived at 10 a.m. and you could see that the line was moving steadily. At each station, we were greeted by courtesy and friendly State Fair workers. We were told that the State Fair worked tirelessly last week to make improvements—and it showed!

The Big Tex Fair Food Drive-Thru is a progressive Fair food experience on the grounds of the great State Fair of Texas. Visitors are able to drive through the grounds, which are decked out in State Fair style, picking up Fair food favorites along the way. At Big Tex circle, visitors park and exit their cars to have their annual pictures taken by a professional photographer. The experience continues with a drive along the Lagoon to pick up some of the sweeter offerings and have a bit of Midway fun! The entire experience takes a little more than an hour to complete. And don’t forget, if you want to enjoy your Fair food treats before heading home, you can bring a picnic setup and stop to eat in one of the nearby parking lots on the fairgrounds.

The wait to get inside the fairgrounds was less than forty minutes.
