North Texas Volunteers Commemorate the 22nd 9/11 Anniversary with a Heartfelt Act of Service

In partnership with North Texas Volunteers, an inspiring event unfolded on the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Over 1,000 compassionate individuals from across North Texas united to make a positive impact on their community by packing 300,000 non-perishable meals destined for the North Texas Food Bank.

Addressing a Growing Issue

The event’s significance was highlighted by the sobering fact that one in four Americans faces food insecurity daily, according to Feeding America. By coming together on this day of remembrance, North Texans sought to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those struggling with hunger.

A Day of Unity and Service

The North Texas Meal Pack for 9/11 Day took place at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, Texas. Co-hosted by AmeriCorps and the 9/11 nonprofit organization, 9/11 Day, the event holds a special place in American history. It was the vision of 9/11 leaders who worked tirelessly to establish September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance under federal law. Now in its fifth year, this event is one of 18 9/11 Day Meal Packs organized nationwide. It’s anticipated that as many as 20,000 volunteers participated across the country, collectively packing more than 6.5 million meals for 9/11 Day as part of Feeding America’s Hunger Action Month.

Corporate and Community Engagement

The North Texas Meal Pack for 9/11 Day received widespread support from the business community. Over 40 leading corporations, including SRS Raise the Roof Foundation, Fannie Mae, UnitedHealth Group, and Aimbridge Hospitality, joined hands with their employees to contribute to this meaningful cause. Nationally, the 9/11 Day Meal Pack program received support from AmeriCorps, Citi, United Airlines, JPMorgan Chase, Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co., and KPMG.

A Message of Gratitude

Trisha Cunningham, president and CEO of the North Texas Food Bank, expressed her gratitude for the volunteers’ collective efforts, stating, “We could not do what we do in the fight against hunger without the support of the community. Because these individuals are willing to give the gift of time in assembling these boxes of food, thousands of neighbors facing hunger in North Texas will have access to nutritious food.”

Remembering 9/11 Through Service

Over the past 22 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks, the 9/11 anniversary has evolved into the largest day of service in America. More than 30 million Americans participate in 9/11 Day each year, dedicating their time to helping those in need. This annual tradition also includes sharing “good deed” plans on social media using the hashtag #IWillFor911Day.

A United America

Michael D. Smith, CEO of AmeriCorps, emphasized the significance of unity and service, stating, “Through a spirit of unity and an enduring commitment to our most cherished values, the 9/11 Day of Service provides Americans an opportunity to reflect, remember, and take action, knowing we’re unstoppable when we stand together.”

About 9/11 Day

The 9/11 Day observance was founded in 2002, inspired by the spirit of unity, service and shared humanity that arose in the United States and spread around the world following the events of September 11, 2001. Today, the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance – also known as 9/11 Day – stands as a permanent tribute to those lost and injured and those who rose in service in response to the tragedy. As the single largest day of service in the U.S., 9/11 Day reminds us that coming together in a spirit of kindness, no matter our differences, has the power to change lives and ultimately, our world.
