National Mental Health Awareness Month: DFW Resource Guide

Guide curated by Angelica Villa and Jedarrian Jones.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Our mental health influences how we think, feel, and interact with the world. By focusing on mental wellness, we can lead happier, more fulfilling lives.

Every stage of life, from childhood to adulthood, is vital for mental health. While awareness has improved, stigma still surrounds mental health issues. It’s important to recognize that mental health challenges are as valid as physical health concerns.

To support mental wellness in our community, we’ve compiled a list of organizations in North Texas dedicated to mental health support. Whether you need assistance, want to volunteer, or wish to donate, there are many ways to make a positive impact!

Community Does It is a public resource center that was created for people in the 75217 community, by the 75217 community! Through focus groups, community members expressed a pressing need for a mental health center for children and teens, feeling empowered to innovate solutions. The envisioned center goes beyond counseling to offer educational and emotional support, alongside a network of resources for parents, acknowledging the importance of self-care. Emphasizing the adage “it takes a village,” the initiative aims to empower parents as pillars of the community, recognizing their integral role in fostering a safe environment for children. These resilient parents not only highlighted barriers to mental health services but also outlined a vision for a supportive community, serving as the inspiration and driving force behind the initiative’s inception and ongoing collaboration.

H.O.M.E. was established to meet the needs of immigration lawyers seeking unbiased psychiatric assessments for refugees and human rights abuse survivors. By bridging the gap between the legal system and migrant trauma survivors, H.O.M.E. fosters a trauma-informed asylum process that aids those most in need of protection. Trauma can hinder testimony, but qualified clinicians can help officials better understand migrants’ experiences, reducing the likelihood of cases being wrongly denied. H.O.M.E. assists immigrants by documenting their trauma and its effects, educates the public on humanitarian migration, and advocates for mental health-supportive immigration laws, denouncing harmful policies like family separation and solitary detention.
