OURCALLING TO SERVE 500-PLUS HOMELESS FRIENDS AT ITS OUTREACH CENTER, THANKS TO SUPPORT OF 200 VOLUNTEERS WEDNESDAY (NOV. 27) FROM 8 A.M.-1 P.M. (LUNCH AT 11 A.M.); PUBLIC INVITED TO DROP OFF NEW OR GENTLY USED BLANKETS, COATS AND SWEATPANTS THAT DAY
Faith-based nonprofit brings dignity, love and community at a time when homeless men and women – many who’ve lost contact with family – may feel hopeless and forgotten;
WHAT: Faith-based nonprofit OurCalling, which serves the unsheltered homeless in Dallas County year-round, is trying to make the holiday just as meaningful and special for those men and women who don’t have a place to gather for Thanksgiving.
On Wednesday (Nov. 27), approximately 200 volunteers will be on hand to help serve Thanksgiving dinner to 500-plus men and women who are currently homeless, living on the streets, in the woods or under bridges.
What makes this event unique is that each table will be decorated by volunteers, and families and individuals will be seated at each table to engage their homeless friends in community and conversation. The Thanksgiving meal will be cooked by The Food Trap, a catering and meal prep company in Dallas.
The morning will begin around 8:30 a.m. as OurCalling welcomes people experiencing homelessness into the facility. Thanksgiving lunch will be served between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
CALL TO ACTION: The general public, along with OurCalling supporters, has been asked to donate new and gently used blankets, coats and sweatpants to the facility. Volunteers will be available outside the facility from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday to facilitate the drive-through donation event.
WHO: OurCalling expects around 500 homeless friends to take part in the Thanksgiving celebration, and approximately 200 volunteers will be on hand to host and accommodate their needs.
Wayne Walker, CEO and Pastor of OurCalling will be available for interviews. Some of the families hosting tables, along with several homeless men and women, will also do interviews.
WHEN: Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024. Homeless individuals will be invited into the building at 8:30 a.m. Thanksgiving meals will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
WHERE: 1702 South Cesar Chavez Boulevard, Dallas.
PARKING: Parking is available at OurCalling. Staff and volunteers will be outside to direct traffic and parking. The onsite point person will be Ali Hendricksen; please call her at 707-474-7012 upon arrival.
