Meadows Wind Ensemble: Into the blue…
7:30 p.m.
Caruth Auditorium / Owen Arts Center
$17 for adults; $13 for seniors; $11 for students, faculty and staff
The program will feature a performance of George Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue, with Meadows pianist David Karp as soloist. This particular performance will be a double celebration. Gershwin’s classic turns 100 years old this year, having received its premiere on February 12, 1924 in New York City’s Aeolian Hall, and the distinguished David Karp is celebrating his fiftieth year of teaching at the Meadows School of the Arts. Dr. Karp will be retiring from fulltime teaching at the end of the year.
Into the blue… will also include a performance of perhaps the best-known work by one of the Meadows School’s most famous graduates, Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli. The program will kick off with what has become a signature MWE piece, Leonard Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs—just in time for the movie! Not coincidentally, both Ticheli and Bernstein have/had close connections to David Karp.
